A striking woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu II capturing the intense energy of a kabuki actor in a dramatic stage pose.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu II depicts the kabuki actor Ichimura Kamezo in a dynamic, performative pose. The Torii school held a position of authority in the documentation of the Edo-period theatre, often focusing on the exaggerated expressions and physical intensity of actors during climactic scenes. This work belongs to the urushi-e tradition, where hand-applied pigments, sometimes mixed with glue to create a lacquer-like sheen, were used to augment the printed lines.
The composition centres on the actor, whose posture conveys a sense of immediate action. He grips a large hatchet, his face set in a mask-like expression of determination. The lines are bold and calligraphic, characteristic of the Torii style, which prioritised the graphic power of the actor's form over realistic anatomical representation. The background remains minimal, suggesting a stage setting through simple architectural cues and stylised foliage, which allows the viewer to focus entirely on the figure and his costume.
Kiyomasu II followed in the tradition of his predecessors, maintaining the school's focus on the 'aragoto' style of acting, which was known for its rough, heroic, and masculine energy. The print captures the essence of the theatre, reflecting the way these images functioned as promotional material for fans of the kabuki stage. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and muted yellows, which have aged to provide a soft, historical quality to the paper. This print offers a clear view into the aesthetic priorities of eighteenth-century Japanese printmaking, where the marriage of graphic design and theatrical performance defined the visual culture of the era.
