A striking 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the intense theatrical presence of kabuki actor Ichikawa Ebizō IV.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Ebizō IV in the role of Abe no Sadato, disguised as the itinerant monk Ryōzan. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a brief but intense period of activity for the artist, who created approximately 140 portraits of kabuki actors within a ten-month span. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised depictions common in the ukiyo-e genre of the time. Instead, he employed a style of caricature that exaggerated the facial features and expressions of his subjects, capturing the psychological intensity of the performance.
The composition is defined by bold, sweeping lines that delineate the heavy robes of the monk. The actor holds a shakujō, or monk's staff, with a firm grip, his gaze directed away from the viewer with a sense of focused determination. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones of grey, cream, and soft ochre, which allows the stark black outlines to command attention. The figure stands against a plain background, a technique that removes environmental context to focus entirely on the actor's presence and costume.
Sharaku's work was often met with mixed reactions from contemporary audiences who were accustomed to the more flattering portrayals of actors by other masters. However, his ability to convey the raw energy of the kabuki stage remains a subject of study. This print captures the specific theatricality of the Edo period, where the boundary between the performer and the character was frequently blurred. The inclusion of the actor's crest and the specific details of the monk's attire provide a glimpse into the visual language of 18th-century Japanese theatre, documenting both the fashion of the stage and the unique artistic vision of Sharaku.
