A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyomine, capturing the dramatic intensity of the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro II in a traditional aragoto pose.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomine depicts the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro II in a characteristic pose. The Torii school held a long association with the kabuki theatre, producing promotional prints that functioned as advertisements for the actors and their performances. The artist employs the bold, graphic style typical of the school, focusing on the exaggerated features and dramatic posture of the performer.
The figure is rendered with strong, clear outlines and a limited palette of red, black, and ochre. The actor wears the traditional costume associated with the aragoto style, a rough and masculine performance mode pioneered by the Danjuro lineage. The exaggerated facial expression, with wide eyes and a grimace, communicates the intensity of the character portrayed on stage. The composition is balanced, with the actor positioned centrally against a plain background, allowing the viewer to focus on the details of the costume and the calligraphic inscriptions above.
Kiyomine, a member of the Torii family, followed the conventions established by his predecessors. The print includes the characteristic seals of the Torii school, which served as a mark of authenticity and professional affiliation. The inclusion of text, likely a poem or a commentary on the performance, integrates the visual and literary elements common in Edo-period prints. This work provides a window into the theatrical culture of the period, capturing the energy of the kabuki stage through the medium of the woodblock print. The print demonstrates the technical skill involved in carving and printing, with precise registration of the colour blocks. It remains a representative example of the yakusha-e genre, which documented the popular culture and celebrity of the time.
