An early eighteenth-century woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu, depicting a kabuki actor in the role of a flower vendor.
This woodblock print by Okumura Toshinobu depicts the kabuki actor Hayakawa Hatsuse in the role of a flower vendor. The work is a fine example of urushi-e, a technique where hand-applied pigments, sometimes mixed with glue to create a lacquer-like sheen, were added to black-and-white prints. The actor is shown carrying a bamboo pole across his shoulders, from which two baskets of seasonal flowers are suspended. The composition balances the figure of the actor with the delicate botanical elements, creating a sense of harmony typical of the period.
Toshinobu was a member of the Okumura school, which was active during the early eighteenth century. His work often focused on kabuki actors, who were popular subjects for ukiyo-e artists. The actor is dressed in a kimono featuring a bold, geometric pattern, which contrasts with the organic forms of the flowers. The use of line is precise, defining the folds of the fabric and the structure of the baskets with clarity. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones of red, yellow, and black to draw attention to the central figure.
The print reflects the cultural climate of Edo-period Japan, where the theatre and its performers held a significant place in urban life. By portraying an actor in a humble, everyday role, the artist bridges the gap between the theatrical world and the daily experiences of the city dwellers. The print is a representative piece of the early ukiyo-e tradition, showing the development of printmaking techniques before the introduction of full-colour nishiki-e printing later in the century. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the historical character of the piece, preserving the aesthetic choices of the artist from nearly three centuries ago.
