This woodblock print by Torii Kiyonobu I depicts the kabuki actor Bando Matakuro I. As a founder of the Torii school, Kiyonobu I established the visual language for the depiction of actors in the Edo period. His work focuses on the exaggerated, dramatic poses characteristic of the kabuki stage, often referred to as mie. The actor is shown in a dynamic posture, clutching a staff while looking upward toward a bird in flight. The composition is balanced by the organic form of a tree branch, which provides a sense of setting without distracting from the figure.
The print is an example of tan-e, a style of early ukiyo-e where hand-applied orange-red pigment (tan) was used to add colour to the black-and-white ink impressions. The lines are bold and calligraphic, reflecting the influence of the artist's background in sign painting for kabuki theatres. The figure's robes feature simplified floral motifs, rendered with a flat, graphic quality that avoids realistic shading or perspective. This approach prioritises the clarity of the actor's costume and the intensity of his expression over anatomical accuracy.
Kiyonobu I was instrumental in the commercialisation of actor prints, which served as promotional material for theatre performances. These prints were often sold at the entrance of playhouses, allowing fans to collect images of their favourite performers. The paper shows the natural ageing typical of early eighteenth-century woodblock prints, with a warm, muted tone that complements the limited palette of ochre, soft red, and ink black. The work remains a primary example of the early development of the ukiyo-e genre, capturing the theatrical energy of the period through a refined, minimalist aesthetic.
