A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga, depicting the kabuki actor Arashi Wakano in a decorative kimono.
This woodblock print by Nishimura Shigenaga depicts the kabuki actor Arashi Wakano. Shigenaga was a significant figure in the early development of Ukiyo-e, operating a studio in Edo that produced numerous prints of actors and famous beauties. His work often utilised the benizuri-e technique, a form of early colour printing that relied on a limited palette of pink and green pigments applied to the monochrome base.
The composition features the actor standing beneath a large, open umbrella, framed by flowering plum branches. The figure wears a kimono decorated with a series of smaller, framed portraits, a stylistic choice that adds a layer of visual complexity to the garment. The actor's pose is graceful, with a slight tilt of the head that suggests a moment of performance or a staged portrait. The lines are precise and calligraphic, characteristic of the early eighteenth-century style, which prioritised clarity of form over the atmospheric depth seen in later periods.
Shigenaga was known for his influence on younger artists, including Suzuki Harunobu, who would later refine the multi-block printing process. This print captures the aesthetic of the period, where the focus remained on the stylised representation of the human form and the decorative potential of textiles. The muted colour palette, aged by time, provides a soft quality to the paper, allowing the black ink outlines to define the subject clearly. The inclusion of the artist's signature and seal confirms the authenticity of the work, placing it within the broader context of Edo-period print culture. This piece offers a view into the theatrical world of the eighteenth century, where actors were celebrated as icons of popular culture, their likenesses captured in these accessible, mass-produced images.
