A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro depicting the kabuki actor Arashi Otohachi in a detailed samurai costume.
This woodblock print by Torii Kiyohiro captures the actor Arashi Otohachi in a theatrical role. The composition belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which focuses on the depiction of kabuki actors. Kiyohiro was a member of the Torii school, a group closely associated with the kabuki theatre in Edo. The school maintained a distinct style characterised by bold lines and a focus on the dramatic presence of the performer.
The print is a benizuri-e, a type of early polychrome print that typically employs a limited palette of pink (beni) and green. The actor is shown in a standing pose, wearing a kimono decorated with a pine-needle pattern. The garment features a plaid outer layer, which adds a geometric contrast to the organic motifs of the under-robe. A sword is tucked into the obi, indicating the character's status as a samurai, despite the feminine attire worn for the stage role.
In the upper right corner, a fan-shaped cartouche contains a depiction of Mount Fuji, a common motif in Japanese art. Calligraphic inscriptions accompany the figure, providing context regarding the actor and the performance. The lines are clean and deliberate, typical of the Torii school's approach to printmaking. The figure occupies the majority of the frame, with the background left largely empty to focus attention on the costume and the actor's posture. This work provides a view into the aesthetic conventions of the mid-eighteenth-century Japanese theatre, where the boundaries of gender and identity were fluidly navigated through performance and costume. The print remains a clear example of the technical and stylistic development of the Ukiyo-e tradition during the transition toward full-colour printing.
