A detailed woodcut by Christoffel Jegher after a design by Peter Paul Rubens, depicting the biblical temptation of Christ in the wilderness.
This woodcut, executed by Christoffel Jegher, reproduces a design by the Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens. The composition depicts the biblical narrative of the temptation of Christ in the wilderness. Christ is seated upon a rocky outcrop, gesturing with his right hand as he rejects the offer of the tempter, who stands before him holding stones. The tempter is rendered with a rugged, almost bestial appearance, contrasting with the serene, haloed figure of Christ. A serpent, a traditional symbol of evil, coils at the base of the rocks, reinforcing the thematic tension of the scene.
Jegher was a highly skilled woodcutter who collaborated closely with Rubens to translate the painterly qualities of his designs into the medium of the woodblock. The print demonstrates a sophisticated use of line to create volume and texture. The drapery of the garments is rendered with sweeping, rhythmic strokes that suggest weight and movement, while the surrounding foliage and rocky terrain are defined by varied hatching techniques. This collaboration allowed Rubens to reach a wider audience through the distribution of prints, as the woodcut medium was more accessible than large-scale oil paintings.
The inclusion of the text 'CVM PRIVILEGIIS' at the bottom indicates the legal protection of the copyright for the print, a common practice for high-quality reproductions in the seventeenth century. The work reflects the dramatic energy and anatomical precision characteristic of the Baroque period. The interplay between light and shadow, achieved through the density of the woodcut lines, provides a sense of depth and atmosphere to the wilderness setting. This print remains a fine example of the technical synergy between a master painter and a specialist printmaker during the Dutch and Flemish Golden Age.
