A refined Neoclassical drawing by Charles Meynier, depicting the departure of Telemachus from the island of Calypso with precise ink wash and graphite technique.
This drawing by Charles Meynier depicts a scene from the Odyssey, specifically the departure of Telemachus from the island of Ogygia. Guided by his mentor, the young prince turns away from the nymph Calypso and her attendants. Meynier, a student of François-André Vincent, was a prominent figure in the French Neoclassical tradition. His work often focused on themes from classical antiquity, adhering to the rigorous standards of composition and draughtsmanship favoured by the Académie Royale.
The composition is structured with clear, linear precision. On the left, the figures of Mentor and Telemachus move with purpose toward the shore, where the prow of a ship is visible. Their posture contrasts with the group of women on the right, whose gestures convey hesitation and sorrow. The use of ink wash creates a subtle range of grey tones, defining the drapery of the classical garments and the texture of the surrounding trees. The artist employs a balanced arrangement of figures, typical of the period, to direct the viewer's eye across the narrative arc of the scene.
Meynier’s attention to anatomical accuracy and the fluid lines of the clothing reflect the influence of antique sculpture. The drawing serves as a study in movement and emotional expression within a formalised, historical context. By focusing on the moment of departure, the artist captures the tension between duty and desire. The work remains a clear example of the technical proficiency expected of artists during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in France. It provides a window into the pedagogical methods of the time, where the study of classical literature and the mastery of line were essential components of an artist's training.
