A conceptual 1980 drawing by Reinjan Mulder, depicting the Netherlands as a geometric abstraction on graph paper.
Reinjan Mulder, a Dutch writer and visual artist, produced this work in 1980. It represents a conceptual approach to cartography, stripping the geography of the Netherlands down to its most basic geometric components. By utilising standard graph paper, Mulder imposes a rigid, mathematical structure upon the organic shape of the country. The resulting image is a series of squares that approximate the national borders, creating a pixelated or schematic version of the Dutch territory.
The work functions as a critique of how we perceive and measure space. Rather than providing a realistic depiction, Mulder focuses on the abstraction of land into data points. The diagonal lines crossing the grid add a layer of technical precision, suggesting the tools of an architect or surveyor. This reductionist method removes the typical markers of a map, such as cities, rivers, or roads, leaving only the outline defined by the grid squares. It is a study in order and the human desire to categorise the physical world through systems of measurement.
Visually, the print is stark and monochromatic. The contrast between the fine, light grid lines and the bolder, hand-drawn outline of the country creates a clear hierarchy of information. The work belongs to a period of conceptual practice where the idea behind the art is as important as the final output. By choosing such a mundane medium as graph paper, Mulder elevates a common office supply to the status of a fine art tool. This piece invites the viewer to consider the artificiality of borders and the way that grids shape our understanding of geography. It is a precise, intellectual exercise in form and representation, stripped of unnecessary detail.
