Kawanabe Kyōsai was a prolific artist during the transition from the Edo period to the Meiji era. His work often bridged traditional Japanese painting techniques with a keen sense of observation and humour. This hanging scroll depicts a tanuki, or raccoon dog, peering down at its own reflection in a body of water. The composition relies on the economy of the brush, a hallmark of the sumi-e tradition. Kyōsai uses varying densities of ink to suggest the texture of the animal's fur and the soft, rippling quality of the water surface.
The tanuki is a figure of folklore in Japan, frequently associated with mischief and transformation. Here, the artist captures a quiet, contemplative moment rather than a supernatural scene. The negative space surrounding the subject is intentional, drawing the viewer's eye to the interaction between the animal and its mirrored image. The brushwork is fluid and confident, demonstrating the artist's mastery of ink wash techniques. By focusing on the reflection, Kyōsai introduces a subtle narrative element, inviting the viewer to consider the animal's perspective as it encounters its own likeness.
Kyōsai received training in both the Kanō school and ukiyo-e traditions, which allowed him to move between formal academic styles and more expressive, individualistic approaches.
