This woodblock print is part of the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a collection that established Hokusai as a master of the genre. The composition depicts the Tama River, which flows through the Musashi Province, with the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji rising in the distance. Hokusai employs a clear, horizontal structure to separate the foreground, middle ground, and background, creating a sense of distance and scale.
In the foreground, a traveller leads a horse along the riverbank, while a small boat navigates the water. The artist uses a limited palette, dominated by Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become available in Japan.
