Beskrivning
A 1971 lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler featuring a sea-foam green field punctuated by delicate, abstract marks and geometric forms.
Tahiti (1971) is a lithograph by Helen Frankenthaler, an artist associated with the second generation of American Abstract Expressionism. Frankenthaler is recognised for her soak-stain technique, where she thinned paint to allow it to soak directly into unprimed canvas, creating a fusion of colour and support. This print reflects her interest in the interplay between negative space and gestural marks.
The composition is dominated by a field of soft, sea-foam green. Against this expanse, Frankenthaler places a series of sparse, deliberate elements. To the left, two rectangular blocks of white provide a structural anchor. A thin, vertical white line bisects the upper portion of the work, while a delicate, serpentine white line descends below it. In the upper right, a dark, elongated shape suggests a horizon or a floating form, balanced by a curved, cream-coloured stroke. A singular, yellow circular mark sits in the lower left, providing a point of chromatic contrast.
Frankenthaler often drew inspiration from nature, though her work remains firmly rooted in abstraction. In this print, the title suggests a tropical reference, yet the imagery avoids literal representation. Instead, the artist focuses on the relationship between the flat, coloured ground and the floating marks. The lithographic process allows for a specific texture, where the ink sits upon the paper surface with a distinct clarity. The work demonstrates her ability to balance spontaneity with careful placement, a hallmark of her printmaking practice during the 1970s. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Frankenthaler invites the viewer to engage with the physical properties of the ink and the spatial tension created by the arrangement of simple geometric and organic forms.
