A seminal work of Synchromism, this abstract painting uses geometric planes of saturated colour to create a rhythmic, musical visual experience.
Synchromy in Blue-Violet is a primary example of the Synchromist movement, which Morgan Russell co-founded with Stanton Macdonald-Wright in Paris. The movement sought to replace traditional representational subject matter with the pure arrangement of colour. Russell believed that colour possessed the same structural potential as music, aiming to create visual harmonies through the juxtaposition of chromatic planes.
The composition consists of geometric shards of pigment, arranged to suggest a sense of rhythmic movement across the canvas. Rather than relying on line to define form, Russell uses the interaction of adjacent hues to create a sense of volume and spatial depth. The application of paint is dense and tactile, with visible brushwork that adds a physical quality to the surface. The palette is dominated by high-chroma tones, including primary reds, yellows, and blues, which are balanced by secondary greens and violets. These colours are not applied in a random fashion; they follow a systematic approach to colour theory that Russell developed during his time in Europe, influenced by his study of the Old Masters and his interest in the scientific properties of light.
This work represents a departure from the figurative traditions of the early twentieth century. By stripping away narrative elements, Russell invites the viewer to engage directly with the optical experience of the painting. The arrangement of shapes creates a sense of tension and release, mirroring the structure of a musical composition. As a piece of early American abstraction, it demonstrates a rigorous approach to formal experimentation, focusing on the autonomy of colour as a means of expression. The work remains an essential reference for understanding the development of non-objective art in the United States during the pre-war period.
