A dynamic linocut by Claude Flight, capturing the rhythmic motion of fairground swing boats through bold geometric forms and a restricted colour palette.
Claude Flight, a central figure in the British linocut movement of the 1920s and 1930s, produced this work during a period of intense experimentation with printmaking techniques. As a teacher at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, Flight advocated for the use of linoleum as a medium that allowed for bold, rhythmic compositions. He sought to capture the energy of modern life through simplified forms and dynamic movement.
In Swing Boats, Flight reduces the fairground subject to its essential geometry. The composition relies on a series of concentric curves and diagonal lines to convey the arc of the swinging boats. The rhythmic repetition of these shapes creates a sense of kinetic energy, pulling the viewer into the motion of the ride. The colour palette is restricted, using shades of blue against a cream background, with accents of red to define the structure of the boats. This economy of means is characteristic of Flight's approach, where he prioritised the visual impact of the print over realistic representation.
Flight was instrumental in promoting the linocut as a legitimate fine art form. His work often focused on themes of speed, transport, and leisure, reflecting the rapid changes in early twentieth-century society. By stripping away unnecessary detail, he achieved a clarity of form that aligns with the broader modernist interest in abstraction and design. The print demonstrates his mastery of the medium, with clean lines and a balanced distribution of colour that maintains the integrity of the paper surface. This piece remains a clear example of the Grosvenor School's aesthetic, which combined European avant-garde influences with a distinctly British sensibility regarding graphic design and print production.
