A detailed mezzotint engraving depicting a dog waiting patiently before a closed door, capturing a moment of quiet anticipation.
Suspense is a mezzotint engraving by Benjamin Phelps Gibbon, based on an original painting by Sir Edwin Landseer. The work depicts a large dog waiting expectantly before a closed door. The animal sits with its head bowed, its gaze fixed upon the threshold, suggesting a state of quiet anticipation. Beside the dog, a table holds a piece of armour, while a discarded feather lies on the floor, adding to the narrative quality of the scene.
Gibbon was a skilled engraver, known for his ability to translate the textures of fur and fabric into the medium of print. The mezzotint process allows for a range of tonal values, from deep shadows to soft highlights, which Gibbon employs to create a sense of atmosphere within the room. The composition is focused on the dog, whose posture conveys a sense of loyalty and patience. The surrounding objects are rendered with precision, providing context to the setting without distracting from the primary subject.
This print reflects the Victorian interest in anthropomorphism and the emotional lives of animals, a theme frequently explored by Landseer. The title, Suspense, directs the viewer to consider the narrative behind the dog's wait. Is the master returning, or is the dog simply performing a habitual duty? The ambiguity of the situation invites the viewer to construct their own interpretation of the scene. The print is a fine example of nineteenth-century reproductive engraving, where the technical skill of the engraver was essential in bringing the work of popular painters to a wider audience. The monochromatic palette enhances the sombre mood of the composition, focusing attention on the form and expression of the animal.
