A classical history painting by Nicolas Bertin depicting the biblical narrative of Susanna and the Elders within a garden setting.
Nicolas Bertin, a French painter active during the transition from the late Baroque to the early Rococo period, depicts the biblical narrative of Susanna and the Elders in this composition. The scene captures the moment of confrontation within a garden setting, a common motif in European art history. Bertin employs a theatrical arrangement, placing the figures around a stone fountain, which serves as a structural anchor for the narrative action.
Susanna is positioned centrally, her posture conveying distress as she is approached by the two men. The artist utilises a palette of muted earth tones for the surrounding foliage and architecture, which contrasts with the lighter flesh tones of the central figure. The drapery, rendered in deep blues and whites, provides a sense of movement and volume. Bertin's technique demonstrates the influence of his training at the Académie Royale, where he won the Prix de Rome in 1685. His work often features this blend of classical figure construction and the lighter, more decorative sensibilities that would define the subsequent French style.
The lighting in the work is directed to draw attention to the interaction between the three figures, leaving the background elements in relative shadow. The fountain, with its vertical jet of water, adds a sense of depth to the composition, guiding the eye through the garden space. Bertin's approach to the subject avoids excessive melodrama, focusing instead on the physical positioning of the figures to communicate the tension of the encounter. The painting reflects the period's interest in moralising narratives presented through the lens of classical aesthetics, a common practice among painters of the early eighteenth century in France.
