A mid-century abstract composition by Cameron Booth, featuring bold, gestural forms and a balanced interplay of saturated and muted colours.
Cameron Booth, a significant figure in the development of mid-century American modernism, produced this work during a period when his practice shifted decisively toward abstraction. The composition demonstrates his interest in the physical properties of paint and the structural potential of colour. Rather than depicting a recognisable subject, the canvas functions as a field of energetic marks and layered forms.
The work is defined by a central cluster of dense, opaque shapes. Booth employs a palette that balances muted earth tones with sudden, high-chroma accents. A large, rounded red form sits near the top, providing a visual anchor against the surrounding grey and yellow fields. Below this, the application of paint becomes more gestural, with visible brushwork and overlapping layers of blue, black, and white. The right side of the canvas is dominated by a broad expanse of yellow, which contrasts with the darker, more concentrated forms on the left.
Booth’s approach to the canvas is deliberate. He avoids the chaotic spontaneity often associated with the New York School, opting instead for a controlled arrangement of shapes that suggest a sense of balance. The interaction between the flat, coloured planes and the more textured, impasto-heavy areas creates a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective. This piece reflects the artist's transition from his earlier figurative work to the non-objective style he pursued in his later career. The title, Surprise, hints at the unexpected nature of the colour relationships and the sudden shifts in form that occur across the surface. It is a study in the tension between order and spontaneity, characteristic of the mid-century abstract movement.
