Beskrivning
A 1987 screenprint by Helen Frankenthaler, featuring bold blocks of blue and yellow balanced by delicate, gestural lines on a white ground.
Sun Corner, produced in 1987, represents the later period of Helen Frankenthaler's career, during which she continued to explore the relationship between colour, form, and the physical surface of the paper. Known for her soak-stain technique, Frankenthaler shifted her focus in her printmaking to embrace the graphic potential of screenprinting. This work demonstrates her ability to balance large, flat areas of colour with precise, linear elements.
The composition is defined by a stark, white ground that acts as a negative space, allowing the primary colours to exert their full visual weight. A bold, vertical block of blue occupies the left side, while a sweeping, organic shape of yellow anchors the bottom and right. These saturated forms are punctuated by delicate, hand-drawn lines in red and dark grey. These lines introduce a sense of spontaneity and human gesture, contrasting with the controlled, solid blocks of colour. The interaction between these elements creates a sense of spatial ambiguity, where the forms appear to float or shift against the white background.
Frankenthaler's approach to printmaking was collaborative, yet she maintained a rigorous control over the final output. In Sun Corner, the edges of the coloured shapes retain a slight irregularity, suggesting the fluidity of paint even within the mechanical process of screenprinting. The work avoids complex layering, opting instead for a clarity of form that invites the viewer to observe the interplay of hue and line. By stripping away representational imagery, the artist directs attention to the fundamental components of the visual experience. This print is an example of her mature style, where the economy of means produces a clear, direct impact on the viewer.
