A classic Rococo scene by François Boucher, depicting an idealised pastoral moment with figures and livestock in a soft, atmospheric setting.
François Boucher, a central figure of the French Rococo, produced this work in 1749. It belongs to a series of four paintings representing the seasons, commissioned for the cabinet of Madame de Pompadour at the Château de Crécy. The scene depicts an idealised rural setting, a common theme in eighteenth-century French art where the aristocracy engaged with the concept of the simple life.
The composition features a young woman standing beside a rustic shelter, accompanied by a cow and sheep. Nearby, a seated couple rests by a stream, with the man playing bagpipes. The figures are dressed in refined, theatrical versions of peasant clothing, reflecting the period's preference for artifice over realism. Boucher employs a light, airy palette, dominated by soft blues in the sky and warm tones in the clothing of the figures. The brushwork is fluid, creating a sense of movement in the foliage and the clouds above.
Boucher was known for his ability to blend classical influences with contemporary decorative tastes. This painting demonstrates his skill in managing light and shadow to create a harmonious, balanced scene. The inclusion of the bagpipes and the specific arrangement of the animals are typical of his pastoral output, which often served as a backdrop for courtly entertainment. The work remains a clear example of the aesthetic priorities of the mid-eighteenth century, where nature was viewed through a lens of elegance and leisure. The Wallace Collection holds this piece, which continues to be studied for its technical execution and its role in the decorative programmes of the French monarchy.
