A 1970 abstract work by Joan Snyder, featuring horizontal bands of colour, gestural brushwork, and controlled paint drips on a grid-structured canvas.
Joan Snyder created Summer Orange in 1970, a period during which she began to deconstruct the conventions of abstract painting. This work belongs to her early series of grid paintings, where the underlying structure of the canvas is visible, yet the application of paint disrupts the order. Snyder employs a variety of techniques, including broad, gestural brushstrokes, spray enamel, and controlled drips that run down the surface of the work.
The composition is divided into horizontal bands, suggesting a rhythmic, almost musical progression across the canvas. The colour palette is dominated by warm, seasonal tones, with oranges, yellows, and deep ochres interacting with darker, contrasting marks of black and purple. These colours are applied with varying degrees of opacity, allowing the texture of the canvas to remain present. The drips, which appear at the edges of the horizontal strokes, introduce an element of chance and gravity to the otherwise structured arrangement.
Snyder’s approach to the canvas is physical and direct. By combining traditional oil paint with industrial materials like spray enamel, she creates a dialogue between different modes of mark-making. The grid serves as a framework, but the paint itself behaves with a degree of autonomy. This tension between the rigid geometry of the grid and the fluid, expressive nature of the paint is a hallmark of her practice. The work invites the viewer to observe the process of its creation, as each layer of pigment and each deliberate drip contributes to the overall visual experience. It is an exploration of how colour and form can occupy space, moving away from the purely formalist concerns of the era toward a more personal and emotive mode of abstraction.
