A powerful mural section by Diego Rivera, depicting elemental human forms emerging from the earth in warm, glowing tones.
Subterranean Forces is a section of the larger mural cycle created by Diego Rivera for the Palacio de Cortés in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Commissioned by Dwight Morrow, the United States ambassador to Mexico, the work occupies a space that reflects the artist's interest in the geological and historical layers of the region. Rivera employs a monumental style, using the human form to represent elemental powers and the physical earth.
The composition features a central female figure with arms outstretched, positioned above a cluster of crystalline structures. She is surrounded by other figures who appear to emerge from or merge with the surrounding earth. The palette is dominated by warm, glowing tones of ochre, amber, and gold, which suggest the heat and energy of the subterranean environment. The figures are rendered with a sense of weight and volume, characteristic of Rivera's approach to mural painting, where the human body acts as a vessel for symbolic meaning.
Rivera integrates the architectural elements of the building, such as the circular windows, into the composition. This creates a dialogue between the painted surface and the physical structure of the palace. The work avoids static representation, instead using fluid lines and dynamic poses to convey a sense of movement. By focusing on the relationship between humanity and the natural world, Rivera explores themes of creation and the raw power of the landscape. The mural remains a primary example of the artist's ability to synthesise pre-Columbian aesthetic influences with modern mural techniques. It functions as a visual narrative of the earth's internal energy, presented through the lens of Mexican history and mythology.
