Nicolas Poussin painted this work in 1651 for Cassiano dal Pozzo. It depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, specifically the tragic end of the lovers Pyramus and Thisbe. The composition is divided between the human drama in the foreground and the atmospheric conditions of the environment. Poussin uses the weather to mirror the emotional intensity of the narrative. A violent storm, complete with lightning, dominates the sky, casting a dark, brooding shadow over the terrain.
The figures of Pyramus and Thisbe are positioned in the lower foreground. Pyramus lies dead, having taken his own life upon discovering the blood-stained veil of his lover, while Thisbe rushes toward him in despair. The surrounding environment is constructed with careful attention to classical architecture and natural forms. Poussin organises the space through a series of receding planes, guiding the eye from the immediate tragedy toward the distant, calmer horizon. The buildings on the right and the hills on the left provide a structured frame for the central action.
