A dramatic eighteenth-century engraving by Jean Jacques Flipart, depicting a ship caught in a storm under moonlight, with figures gathered on a rocky shore.
This etching and engraving by Jean Jacques Flipart depicts a dramatic maritime scene, capturing the tension between the turbulent sea and the calm of the moonlit sky. Flipart, a skilled French engraver, demonstrates his mastery of tonal variation through the use of cross-hatching and stippling to render the shifting light of the moon against the dark, heavy clouds. The composition is divided between the chaotic motion of the ship struggling against the waves and the relative stillness of the rocky shore, where figures gather around a fire.
The work is dedicated to Monsieur Godefroy, the Controller General of the Marine, as noted in the lower margin. This dedication reflects the common eighteenth-century practice of linking artistic production with high-ranking patrons. The inclusion of the lighthouse in the distance provides a sense of scale and navigation, contrasting with the immediate danger faced by the vessel. The figures on the shore, illuminated by the warm glow of their fire, offer a human element to the vast, indifferent power of the ocean. Flipart’s technique allows for a wide range of greys and deep blacks, which effectively communicate the nocturnal atmosphere of the scene. The print serves as a record of the period's fascination with the sublime, where the raw force of nature is presented as both a threat and a subject of aesthetic contemplation. The precision of the lines in the rigging and the texture of the rocks demonstrate the technical rigour expected of a master engraver of the era. This piece remains a fine example of the collaborative nature of eighteenth-century printmaking, where the engraver translated the painterly qualities of an original canvas into the medium of ink on paper.
