A detailed Flemish Baroque still life by Peeter Gijsels, featuring an abundance of fruit, small animals, and classical garden architecture.
Peeter Gijsels, a Flemish painter active in Antwerp, produced this composition during the later period of the seventeenth century. The work belongs to the tradition of the decorative still life, a genre that flourished in the Low Countries. Gijsels combines elements of the vanitas tradition with the opulence of the aristocratic garden setting. The foreground is occupied by a dense arrangement of produce, including grapes, cauliflower, and various fruits, interspersed with small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs. This collection of objects rests upon a stone ledge, partially covered by a patterned textile, near a gilded vessel.
The background features a classical architectural element, specifically a fountain adorned with a sculptural figure. A peacock stands near the water, adding to the sense of controlled nature. The lighting is characteristic of the period, employing a chiaroscuro effect that draws the eye toward the textures of the fruit and the metallic sheen of the plate. Gijsels demonstrates a technical precision in his rendering of surfaces, from the soft fur of the animals to the smooth skins of the grapes. The composition is balanced by the verticality of the stone columns and the horizontal spread of the still life elements. This work reflects the interest of the era in collecting and displaying exotic or abundant natural specimens within a structured, human-made environment. The inclusion of the monkey on the right side introduces a playful, exotic note common in Flemish cabinet paintings of this time. The overall effect is one of quiet observation, where the viewer is invited to examine the individual components of the scene, each rendered with careful attention to detail and form.
