A detailed eighteenth-century Dutch still life featuring an abundant harvest of fruit, wheat, and insects arranged on a stone ledge.
Jacobus Linthorst, a Dutch painter active in the late eighteenth century, produced this elaborate still life in the tradition of the Dutch masters. The composition presents a dense arrangement of produce, including a central pineapple, clusters of green and dark grapes, peaches, pears, and a melon. The inclusion of wheat stalks and various insects, such as a butterfly, introduces a sense of seasonal transition and natural observation common to the genre.
The artist employs a dark, atmospheric background to push the illuminated fruit into the foreground. This technique creates a sense of volume and physical presence. The textures are rendered with precision, from the rough, segmented skin of the pineapple to the translucent, waxy surface of the grapes. Linthorst balances the weight of the larger fruits with smaller elements like redcurrants and hazelnuts, which are scattered across the stone ledge. To the right, a carved stone relief provides a classical architectural element, grounding the organic forms within a formal setting.
Linthorst was known for his technical skill in depicting botanical subjects. His work often reflects the eighteenth-century interest in natural history and the display of exotic or seasonal goods. The lighting is directed from the upper left, casting soft shadows that define the rounded forms of the fruit. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to organise a complex array of objects into a coherent, balanced structure. The palette relies on earthy tones, punctuated by the cooler greens of the foliage and the warmer yellows and reds of the ripening harvest. It is a representative example of the late Dutch still life tradition, focusing on the tactile quality of the subjects and the careful observation of light.
