A detailed Dutch Golden Age still life by Isaac van Duynen, featuring a collection of fish and shellfish arranged on a stone ledge.
Isaac van Duynen, a painter active in the Dutch Golden Age, specialised in the depiction of marine life. This composition, titled Stilleven met vissen, demonstrates the technical precision common to seventeenth-century Dutch still life painting. The artist arranges a variety of sea creatures upon a stone ledge, creating a scene that balances observation with artistic arrangement. A large fish dominates the centre, resting atop a woven basket, while smaller specimens, including a flatfish and several crustaceans, occupy the foreground. To the right, slices of salmon provide a distinct colour contrast against the otherwise muted tones of the catch.
The lighting in this work is characteristic of the period, employing a chiaroscuro effect to define the forms of the fish and the texture of the basket. The background remains dark and indistinct, which directs the viewer's attention to the physical qualities of the subjects. Van Duynen captures the sheen of the scales, the opacity of the oyster shells, and the fibrous nature of the basket with careful brushwork. Such works were often produced for the domestic market, reflecting the importance of the fishing industry to the Dutch economy during the seventeenth century. The composition avoids unnecessary clutter, focusing instead on the tactile reality of the objects. By placing these items on a simple stone surface, the artist provides a sense of weight and presence to the subjects. This print reproduces the tonal range of the original oil painting, maintaining the sombre atmosphere and the specific focus on the textures of the marine life. It is a representative example of the Dutch tradition of documenting the bounty of the sea through a disciplined, observational approach to painting.
