Beskrivning

A modernist still life by Danish artist Vilhelm Lundstrøm, featuring a minimalist arrangement of a white jar, an orange, and a book.

Vilhelm Lundstrøm was a central figure in Danish modernism, known for his rigorous approach to form and colour. This composition displays his characteristic reduction of objects to their essential geometric components. The white jar, the spherical orange, and the rectangular book are arranged with a deliberate, almost architectural precision against a flat, deep blue background. By stripping away extraneous detail, Lundstrøm focuses the viewer on the interplay of volume, light, and shadow.

The painting reflects the influence of Purism and the broader European avant-garde movements of the early twentieth century. Lundstrøm often returned to the still life genre, using it as a laboratory to experiment with spatial relationships and the balance of primary and secondary forms. The colour palette is restrained, relying on the contrast between the cool blue backdrop and the warm, earthy tones of the table and the orange. The brushwork is smooth and controlled, avoiding unnecessary texture to maintain the clarity of the composition.

Lundstrøm’s work from this period demonstrates a move towards a more synthetic style, where the objects exist in a state of equilibrium. The absence of narrative or emotional clutter allows the viewer to engage directly with the formal qualities of the painting. This piece is a clear example of his ability to transform mundane domestic items into objects of structural interest. It remains a representative work of his mature period, where his interest in the interaction between light and solid form reached a high level of refinement.

Artist Biography

Vilhelm Lundstr M

Vilhelm Lundstrøm, a towering figure in Danish modernism, is best known for his singular take on Cubism. Born in Copenhagen in 1893, Lundstrøm defied early expectations, abandoning a traditional academic path to forge his own artistic language. While he flirted with Fauvism early in his career, it was the angular forms and fractured perspectives of Cubism that truly ignited his imagination. Unlike his Parisian contemporaries, Lundstrøm infused the style with a distinctly Scandinavian sensibility, characterised by muted palettes and a quiet, contemplative mood.

Lundstrøm's Cubist period, though relatively brief, produced some of his most iconic works. His still lifes, featuring everyday objects like fruit bowls and bottles, are imbued with a sense of understated elegance. Stripping away extraneous detail, he reduced forms to their essential geometric components, creating a harmonious balance between abstraction and representation. Though he later moved away from Cubism, its influence remained evident in his simplified forms and refined compositions.

Despite his relatively short life – Lundstrøm died in 1950 – his impact on Danish art is undeniable. He paved the way for future generations of abstract artists, demonstrating the power of simplification and the beauty of subtle colour harmonies. Owning a Lundstrøm print is not just about acquiring a piece of art; it's about embracing a legacy of quiet innovation and timeless Scandinavian design.
