A refined still life study by Tamara de Lempicka, featuring a balanced arrangement of fruit and glassware in a soft, atmospheric palette.
Tamara de Lempicka is widely recognised for her polished, sculptural portraits that defined the aesthetic of the interwar period. This still life offers a departure from her typical focus on the human figure, yet it retains the precise control and formal discipline characteristic of her practice. The composition features a collection of domestic objects: a mortar and pestle, a glass carafe, and clusters of grapes arranged upon a shallow dish.
The work displays a softer, more atmospheric quality than the hard-edged, metallic surfaces found in her later, more famous works. The palette relies on muted tones, with subtle transitions between the pale pinks of the background and the warmer, earthy hues of the fruit and table surface. The brushwork is controlled, focusing on the volume of the objects rather than surface texture. The arrangement of the grapes, particularly the contrast between the dark, purple cluster and the lighter, translucent variety, provides a study in light and shadow.
Lempicka, born in Warsaw, spent her formative years in Paris, where she absorbed the influence of Cubism and the neoclassical revival. While this piece lacks the aggressive geometry of her later portraits, it demonstrates her interest in the structural arrangement of space. The objects are placed with deliberate care, creating a sense of balance that is typical of her approach to composition. The inclusion of the mortar and pestle adds a tactile, grounded element to the scene, contrasting with the delicate transparency of the glass and the organic forms of the fruit. This print captures the quiet, contemplative nature of Lempicka's early work, offering a glimpse into the development of her artistic voice before she fully embraced the high-contrast, stylised aesthetic that would define her career in the 1930s.
