A detailed seventeenth-century still life by Clara Peeters, featuring a collection of cheeses, an artichoke, and cherries rendered with technical precision.
Clara Peeters occupies a distinct position within the seventeenth-century Flemish and Dutch art traditions. Her work focuses on the meticulous observation of domestic objects, food, and tableware. This composition presents a collection of items arranged on a wooden surface, demonstrating her ability to render textures ranging from the porous surface of aged cheese to the reflective sheen of metal vessels.
The arrangement features several wheels of cheese, one of which is sliced to reveal its interior. Atop the stack sits a small, blue-patterned dish containing a portion of butter. To the left, a silver vessel holds a mound of salt, while a halved artichoke rests on a pewter plate nearby. The inclusion of cherries and a small loaf of bread adds colour and variety to the scene. Peeters uses a dark, neutral background to push the objects forward, allowing the light to model their forms and define their physical presence.
Peeters is known for her technical precision and her inclusion of subtle self-portraits within the reflections of her metal objects. Her work often explores the sensory qualities of her subjects, inviting the viewer to consider the tactile nature of the items depicted. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the cheese stack countered by the horizontal spread of the plates and the knife. This painting reflects the broader interest in material culture during the period, where the depiction of luxury goods and everyday staples became a primary subject for artists. The work remains a clear example of the technical rigour applied to the genre of breakfast pieces, or ontbijtjes, which were popular among the merchant class of the era.
