A masterful eighteenth-century still life by Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin, featuring a suspended hare and a copper pot rendered with exceptional texture and light.
Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin occupied a unique position in eighteenth-century French art. While his contemporaries pursued the decorative excesses of the Rococo, Chardin turned his attention to the quiet dignity of domestic objects and game. This composition demonstrates his mastery of texture and light. The central element, a hare suspended by its hind legs, is rendered with a tactile quality that captures the coarse fur and the weight of the animal. Beside it, a copper pot provides a strong vertical anchor, its metallic surface reflecting light with subtle variations in tone.
Chardin employed a restrained palette, relying on earthy browns, greys, and the muted orange of the copper to create a sense of atmospheric depth. The background is a simple, textured wall, which prevents the viewer from being distracted by unnecessary detail. The inclusion of a small gourd and scattered nuts on the stone ledge adds a sense of informality to the scene. His brushwork is deliberate, building form through layers of paint rather than sharp outlines. This approach allows the objects to occupy their space with a physical presence that feels both immediate and permanent.
Unlike the grand historical narratives popular at the time, this work finds value in the mundane. Chardin elevated the genre of still life by treating these humble subjects with the same rigour usually reserved for portraiture or religious scenes. The composition is balanced, guiding the eye across the varied surfaces of fur, metal, and stone. It is a study in observation, where the artist invites the viewer to appreciate the subtle interplay of light and shadow on everyday items. The work remains a primary example of his ability to find beauty in the ordinary, stripped of artifice or moralising intent.
