A classic Dutch Golden Age still life by Jan Davidsz de Heem, featuring a roemer glass, grapes, and oysters rendered with technical precision.
Jan Davidsz de Heem was a master of the Dutch Golden Age, particularly recognised for his ability to render textures and light within the still life genre. This composition features a roemer glass, a characteristic vessel of the period, filled with white wine. The glass is adorned with prunts, which are small glass blobs applied to the stem to provide a secure grip. Beside the glass, a peeled lemon spirals downwards, its yellow rind providing a sharp contrast to the darker, muted tones of the background.
The arrangement includes a cluster of white grapes and open oyster shells, elements frequently found in seventeenth-century Dutch painting. These objects often carried symbolic weight, referencing the transience of life or the pleasures of the table. De Heem demonstrates his technical precision through the subtle reflections on the glass surface and the varying translucency of the grapes. The drapery beneath the fruit adds a tactile quality to the foreground, grounding the objects on the wooden surface.
De Heem spent significant time in both Leiden and Antwerp, and his work reflects a synthesis of Northern European precision and the more decorative, fluid style found in Flemish painting. His approach to composition relies on a balanced distribution of light and shadow, which directs the viewer across the various textures of the scene. The artist's signature is visible in the upper right corner, a common practice for works intended for the private art market of the time. This print captures the atmospheric quality of the original oil panel, maintaining the depth and tonal range of the seventeenth-century palette.
