A classic Flemish Baroque still life by Frans Snyders, featuring an abundant display of game, produce, and a protective dog with her puppies.
Frans Snyders was a master of the Flemish Baroque, particularly recognised for his large-scale compositions depicting game, produce, and domestic animals. This work displays the characteristic abundance associated with his studio, where the boundaries between culinary display and natural history blur. The composition is anchored by a central white swan, its plumage providing a stark contrast against the darker, shadowed background of the larder or kitchen setting. To the left, a lobster rests on a platter, while a peacock, its tail feathers fanned out in a display of texture and colour, dominates the upper register.
Snyders often collaborated with other painters, such as Peter Paul Rubens, to populate his works with figures, yet his independent still-life paintings remain his most distinct contribution to the period. The inclusion of the dog and her puppies in the lower right corner adds a narrative element to the scene, grounding the otherwise static arrangement of food and game. The dog, alert and protective, introduces a sense of life that balances the inanimate objects.
Technically, the painting demonstrates the artist's ability to render varied surfaces, from the coarse fur of the animals to the smooth, reflective shell of the lobster and the delicate, translucent grapes in the basket. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the era, drawing the viewer's eye across the table to appreciate the sheer volume of goods. This print captures the tactile quality of the original oil painting, preserving the brushwork that defines the textures of the produce and the animals. It is a study in the excess and material culture of the seventeenth-century Low Countries, where such displays were common in the homes of the merchant class to demonstrate prosperity and the bounty of the natural world.
