André Derain, a central figure in the development of early twentieth-century modernism, produced this still life during a period of transition. While his earlier works were defined by the explosive, non-naturalistic colour palette of Fauvism, this composition shows a shift towards more structured forms and a controlled application of paint. The scene depicts a tabletop cluttered with domestic objects: ceramic vessels, bowls of fruit, and bottles, all draped in heavy, folded fabric.
The composition is anchored by the contrast between the cool, blue-toned drapery and the warm, earthy background. Derain uses bold, deliberate brushwork to define the volumes of the objects, moving away from the flat decorative surfaces of his previous work. The perspective is slightly tilted, a common device in his work of this era, which brings the objects closer to the viewer and flattens the spatial depth of the table surface. The fruit, rendered in simple, rounded forms, provides small accents of orange and red that punctuate the otherwise muted, tonal arrangement.
This work reflects the artist's engagement with the structural experiments of his contemporaries, particularly the influence of Paul Cézanne. Derain focuses on the physical presence of the objects rather than their atmospheric surroundings. The paint application is thick and tactile, revealing the artist's hand in the construction of the image. By reducing the objects to their essential geometric components, Derain creates a sense of stability and weight. Artist Biography
Andre Derain
He was born in Chatou in 1880 and had originally studied to become an engineer. He met Matisse in 1898 while attending painting classes under Eugene Carriere. The Fauvist paintings are explosions of unnatural colour: trees in orange, water in violet, shadows in green. They were among the most radical works produced in Paris at the turn of the century.
By 1908, Derain was already breaking with the style. He turned to Cezanne, then passed through a Cubist phase, and by the 1920s had arrived at a fully Neoclassical manner. The wildest of the Fauves became one of the most conservative painters in France. The conservative turn brought financial success and mainstream praise. During the Second World War, the Nazis approved of his Neoclassical work. After the war, he was unjustly accused of collaboration. His reputation never fully recovered. He died in 1954.
