An early modernist still life by Lee Krasner, featuring geometric forms and a muted, balanced colour palette.
This work by Lee Krasner, produced during her formative years in New York, demonstrates her early engagement with modernist principles. Before her transition into the gestural abstraction for which she is widely recognised, Krasner explored the structural possibilities of the still life genre. The composition reflects the influence of Hans Hofmann, with whom she studied, and the broader European avant-garde movements that shaped the American art scene in the late 1930s.
The painting employs a flattened pictorial space, where objects are reduced to their essential geometric components. Rather than attempting a realistic depiction of fruit or vessels, Krasner prioritises the arrangement of colour planes and angular forms. The palette consists of muted ochres, deep greens, and sharp blues, which interact to create a sense of tension across the canvas. The brushwork is deliberate, with each shape asserting its position within the overall structure. This piece offers a view into the artist's process of deconstructing traditional subjects, a practice that would inform her later, more expansive works. By focusing on the interplay between light and form, Krasner creates a balanced, rhythmic composition that avoids the clutter of traditional still life painting. The work remains a clear example of the transition from representational art to the non-objective styles that would dominate the mid-twentieth century.
