This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I captures a female figure in a graceful, standing pose, characteristic of the early Ukiyo-e tradition. The artist, a member of the Torii school, was known for his work related to the kabuki theatre, often producing prints that featured actors or women in theatrical attire. The composition relies on bold, sweeping lines to define the silhouette of the kimono, which is decorated with motifs of birds and floral patterns. The use of black ink on paper creates a stark contrast, focusing the viewer on the graphic quality of the robes rather than realistic shading or depth.
The figure is depicted with a gentle tilt of the head, a common stylistic choice in early eighteenth-century Japanese prints to convey elegance and poise. The kimono features large, dark-inked bird motifs that dominate the lower and central portions of the garment, balanced by smaller, more delicate patterns near the collar. The artist employs a calligraphic line quality, where the thickness of the stroke varies to suggest the weight and movement of the fabric. This print reflects the aesthetic priorities of the Genroku period, where the focus was on the stylised representation of beauty and fashion.
