A detailed steel engraving depicting the Rembrandt statue on the Botermarkt in Amsterdam, circa 1852.
This steel engraving depicts the bronze statue of Rembrandt van Rijn, created by sculptor Louis Royer, as it appeared on the Botermarkt in Amsterdam during the mid-nineteenth century. The print captures the monument shortly after its unveiling in 1852. The composition focuses on the statue, which stands upon a high pedestal, surrounded by a protective iron railing. The surrounding urban environment is rendered with precision, showing the characteristic gabled architecture of Amsterdam and the daily activity of the square. Figures in period attire populate the foreground, providing a sense of scale and social context to the scene.
The print was produced by G. G. Lange in Darmstadt, a firm known for its topographical and architectural engravings. The technique employed here relies on fine, controlled lines to create tonal variations, allowing for a clear representation of both the sculptural form and the atmospheric conditions of the city. The sky is rendered with subtle shading, suggesting a soft, diffused light typical of the Dutch climate. The inclusion of horse-drawn carriages and pedestrians adds a narrative quality to the image, documenting the square before it was renamed the Rembrandtplein in 1876.
As a historical record, this work provides insight into the urban development of Amsterdam and the public commemoration of its most famous painter. The engraving style is typical of mid-nineteenth-century European printmaking, where clarity and accuracy were prioritised to serve as visual documentation for a public interested in European landmarks. The print remains a valuable reference for the appearance of the Botermarkt prior to the extensive modifications that occurred in the late nineteenth century. The work is preserved in the collection of the Amsterdam City Archives, reflecting its status as a primary visual source for the city's history.
