A delicate study of harvested rice sheaves and dragonflies by the master lacquer artist Shibata Zeshin, rendered in his signature urushi technique.
Shibata Zeshin was a master of both lacquerware and painting, known for his ability to bridge traditional Japanese techniques with a keen observation of the natural world. This work belongs to a series of lacquer paintings that demonstrate his technical command over urushi, a medium typically reserved for decorative objects rather than two-dimensional paper surfaces. By applying lacquer to paper, Zeshin achieved a unique texture and depth that distinguishes his work from standard ink wash paintings of the era.
The composition depicts a rural scene featuring harvested rice sheaves stacked to dry, a common sight in the Japanese countryside during autumn. Several dragonflies hover around the straw and a small, bare branch, adding a sense of movement to the quiet, agricultural setting. The inclusion of hanging wooden implements, likely used for processing or sorting grain, provides a specific narrative detail about the harvest season. Zeshin employs a restrained palette, focusing on the golden tones of the straw and the muted browns of the earth, which allows the subtle red accents of the dragonflies to draw the eye across the frame.
Zeshin’s approach to this subject reflects the Kacho-ga tradition, which focuses on birds and flowers, yet he expands the scope to include the tools and products of human labour. His brushwork is precise, capturing the fibrous quality of the straw and the delicate anatomy of the insects with equal attention. The work is framed by a gold border, a common presentation style for his lacquer paintings, which elevates the humble subject matter. This piece offers a glimpse into the late Edo and early Meiji period, where traditional rural life remained a primary subject for artists who sought to document the changing seasons with technical rigour and artistic sensitivity.
