A precise 1782 academic figure study by Dirk Versteegh, executed in chalk on blue paper to demonstrate mastery of human anatomy and light.
This academic figure study by the Dutch artist Dirk Versteegh dates to 1782. It represents a classic exercise in life drawing, a practice central to the training of artists during the eighteenth century. The work earned the artist a first prize, as noted in the inscription at the top left of the sheet. The figure is depicted in a relaxed, contrapposto stance, leaning against a block. This pose allows the artist to demonstrate a command of human anatomy, particularly in the rendering of the torso and the musculature of the legs.
Versteegh utilised white chalk for the highlights and darker chalk for the shadows, applying these media onto blue-toned paper. This technique, known as drawing in three colours or simply using the paper as a mid-tone, creates a sense of volume and three-dimensional form. The light source originates from the upper left, casting a soft shadow behind the figure that helps to define his silhouette against the background. The artist shows careful attention to the play of light across the skin, using subtle gradations to model the chest and abdomen.
Such drawings were produced in the context of art academies, where students would spend hours sketching live models to master the proportions and structure of the human body. The inscription, written in Latin, confirms the formal nature of this competition piece. The precision of the line work and the balanced composition reflect the rigorous standards of the period. This print captures the technical skill required of an eighteenth-century student, offering a clear view of the methods used to study the human form before the transition to more fluid, expressive styles in the nineteenth century.
