A modernist interpretation of the Gothic interior of Saint-Séverin, featuring distorted architectural lines and a rhythmic play of light and shadow.
Robert Delaunay produced a series of paintings depicting the interior of the Parisian church of Saint-Séverin between 1909 and 1910. This specific work, St. Severin, No. 3, captures the Gothic architecture of the building through a lens of early twentieth-century experimentation. Delaunay moves away from traditional perspective, choosing instead to distort the vertical lines of the columns and the curvature of the arches to create a sense of rhythmic movement.
The composition relies on the interplay between light and shadow, which defines the spatial depth of the nave. By breaking the architectural forms into fragmented planes, Delaunay suggests the influence of Cubism, yet he maintains a focus on the atmospheric quality of the space. The palette is restrained, favouring cool blues, deep greys, and muted ochres, which allow the viewer to focus on the structural geometry rather than local colour. The light filtering through the windows provides a contrast to the shadowed recesses of the stone pillars.
This series represents a shift in Delaunay's practice as he began to move towards the abstraction that would later define his Orphist period.
