This work depicts the Christian martyr St. Sebastian, bound to a tree trunk and pierced by arrows. El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos, painted this piece during his early years in Toledo, Spain. The composition reflects the influence of Italian Renaissance masters, particularly Michelangelo, in the muscular treatment of the figure, yet it introduces the elongated proportions and expressive brushwork that define the artist's mature style.
The figure of the saint occupies the centre of the frame, his body twisted in a contrapposto pose that suggests both physical suffering and spiritual ecstasy.
