A detailed circular engraving by Master ES, featuring St. John the Baptist encircled by the four Evangelists and four Latin Church Fathers.
This circular engraving by the anonymous German printmaker known as Master ES displays the technical precision characteristic of mid-fifteenth-century Northern European graphic art. The composition is organised around a central figure of St. John the Baptist, who is depicted in a rocky, wilderness setting. Surrounding this central scene are eight medallions, each containing a symbolic representation of the four Evangelists and the four Fathers of the Latin Church.
The Evangelists are identified by their traditional attributes: the eagle for John, the ox for Luke, the lion for Mark, and the angel for Matthew. Interspersed among these are the four Church Fathers, shown in scholarly settings, engaged in study or writing. The entire arrangement is bound together by dense, scrolling foliage that fills the circular frame, demonstrating the artist's ability to manage complex, multi-layered visual information within a restricted space.
Master ES was a significant figure in the development of copperplate engraving. His work shows a transition from the earlier, simpler styles of the first half of the century toward a more refined use of hatching and cross-hatching to create volume and texture. The lines are fine and deliberate, allowing for the rendering of subtle details in the drapery of the figures and the organic forms of the surrounding plant life. This print reflects the period's interest in scholastic theology and the systematic organisation of religious imagery. The circular format, often used for designs intended for metalwork or decorative objects, suggests that this print may have served as a model for goldsmiths or other craftsmen of the era. The clarity of the line work and the balanced distribution of the figures demonstrate a high level of control over the burin, a hallmark of the artist's output during his active years in the Upper Rhine region.
