A dramatic Mannerist depiction of Saint Francis of Assisi receiving the stigmata, rendered with the characteristic expressive light and form of Giorgio Vasari.
Giorgio Vasari, known primarily for his biographical accounts of Renaissance artists, was also a prolific painter. This work depicts the moment of the stigmata, where Saint Francis of Assisi experiences the miraculous appearance of the wounds of Christ. The composition follows the traditional iconography of the event, placing the saint in a rocky, secluded setting, often identified as Mount La Verna.
Vasari employs the stylistic characteristics of the Mannerist period, favouring elongated forms and a dramatic, somewhat artificial use of light. The figure of Saint Francis is positioned in a state of spiritual agitation, his hands raised to receive the divine impression. A secondary figure, likely Brother Leo, rests in the lower left, providing a sense of scale and grounding the supernatural event within a human context. The upper left quadrant contains the celestial vision, rendered with a luminous quality that contrasts with the darker, earthy tones of the surrounding terrain.
The painting demonstrates the technical proficiency Vasari acquired through his training in Florence and Rome. The drapery of the saint's habit is handled with fluid brushwork, creating deep folds that suggest movement and weight. The atmospheric perspective in the background, showing a distant, hazy horizon, adds depth to the scene. While Vasari is often associated with the courtly art of the Medici, this religious subject reflects the Counter-Reformation climate of the mid-sixteenth century, which encouraged the depiction of mystical experiences to inspire devotion. The work remains a representative example of the late Mannerist style, where the focus shifts from the balanced proportions of the High Renaissance toward more expressive, theatrical arrangements of figures and space.
