A refined ink wash painting by Kano Osanobu, featuring squirrels on bamboo and rock, executed in the traditional Kano school style.
Kano Osanobu, also known as Kano Eishin, was a prominent member of the Kano school, the professional painting lineage that served the Tokugawa shogunate for centuries. This work demonstrates the technical precision and stylistic restraint characteristic of the school during the late Edo period. The composition features two squirrels, one perched upon a bamboo stalk and another resting on a rock, rendered with a focus on ink wash techniques and calligraphic brushwork.
The artist employs a monochromatic palette, using varying concentrations of ink to suggest volume and texture. The fur of the squirrels is depicted with soft, layered strokes, contrasting with the sharper, more decisive lines used for the bamboo leaves and the structural form of the rock. The negative space is utilised to create a sense of atmosphere, allowing the subjects to occupy a quiet, contemplative space. This approach reflects the Kano school's emphasis on traditional subjects, such as birds and flowers, which were often imbued with symbolic meaning in Japanese art.
Osanobu's work maintains the balance between decorative appeal and technical discipline. The bamboo, a common motif in East Asian painting, serves as a vertical anchor for the composition, while the rock provides a stable base for the lower figure. The ink wash technique, or suiboku-ga, allows for a subtle gradation of tone, which provides depth without the need for complex perspective. This print captures the essence of the original hanging scroll format, preserving the delicate interplay between the ink and the silk surface. It is an example of the refined aesthetic that defined the later years of the Kano school, prior to the significant shifts in Japanese art during the Meiji era.
