This piece features a waka poem concerning the season of spring, executed in the distinctive calligraphic style of Nijō Tametada. As a member of the Nijō family, a prominent lineage of court nobles and poets during the Kamakura period, Tametada was deeply involved in the literary traditions of the imperial court. The work is presented in a vertical format, characteristic of traditional Japanese hanging scrolls, where the brushwork flows with a rhythmic, cursive quality known as sōsho, or grass script.
The ink application demonstrates a mastery of pressure and speed. The characters appear to dance across the paper, with varying line weights that suggest the movement of the artist's hand.
