A 1935 oil painting by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, featuring two figures on a hillside rendered with the artist's characteristic spherical perspective.
Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin painted Spring in 1935, a period when his work moved towards the aesthetic requirements of the Soviet state while retaining his unique technical approach. The composition employs his signature spherical perspective, a technique where the ground plane appears to curve away from the viewer, creating a sense of vast, elevated space. This distortion allows the artist to present both the figures and the distant village simultaneously, as if viewed from a high vantage point.
The two figures, a man in a yellow vest and a woman in a blue dress, sit upon a grassy slope. Their poses are calm and composed, reflecting a sense of stability and optimism. The man looks towards the woman, while she gazes directly at the viewer. The colour palette is deliberate, using primary tones to create a clear, legible image that aligns with the era's preference for clarity and accessible subject matter. The red cap placed on the grass serves as a small, deliberate colour accent, drawing the eye and balancing the composition.
Petrov-Vodkin was known for his interest in the synthesis of traditional Russian icon painting and modern European art. In this work, the figures possess a sculptural quality, their forms defined by clean outlines and smooth modelling. The background, depicting a rural settlement, is rendered with a flattened, aerial view that emphasises the geography of the terrain. This work captures a moment of quiet reflection, typical of the artist's later career, where he sought to reconcile his formal experiments with the demands of his time. The print captures the specific textures of the original oil paint, from the smooth surfaces of the figures' clothing to the varied brushwork used to describe the rolling earth and distant trees.
