A 14th-century ink painting by Lu Guang, depicting a serene mountain scene with a pavilion and bridge in the scholar-official style.
Lu Guang, a painter active during the Yuan Dynasty, produced this work in the tradition of scholar-official ink painting. The composition follows the classic vertical hanging scroll format, common in Chinese art of the period. It depicts a mountainous terrain, with craggy peaks rising above a secluded pavilion. The artist employs dry brushwork and subtle ink washes to define the rock formations and the sparse vegetation clinging to the slopes.
In the lower section, a small bridge spans a stream, leading the eye toward the architectural elements nestled within the mountain folds. The upper portion of the scroll features a poetic inscription, a hallmark of the literati style where calligraphy and painting function as a unified expression. The ink tones remain muted, relying on the contrast between the paper ground and the varying density of the brush strokes to create a sense of atmospheric depth.
Lu Guang was known for his technical precision and his ability to capture the quietude of remote, elevated spaces. This work reflects the aesthetic values of the Yuan period, which prioritised personal expression and the cultivation of a scholarly temperament over decorative artifice. The presence of multiple red seals indicates the history of the work as it passed through various collections over the centuries. The scene evokes a sense of stillness, inviting the viewer to contemplate the relationship between the human-made structures and the natural world. The balanced use of negative space allows the composition to breathe, preventing the dense mountain forms from overwhelming the viewer.
