This etching by the German sculptor and artist Gottfried Schadow serves as a biting piece of political commentary from 1813. During this period, the Napoleonic Wars were reaching a conclusion, and anti-French sentiment was widespread across Europe. Schadow, known primarily for his monumental sculpture work, here adopts the visual language of the political cartoon to mock the French military retreat.
The composition depicts a chaotic scene of soldiers in disarray, reflecting the collapse of French authority. The figures are rendered with exaggerated features and postures, a common technique in satirical prints of the era to diminish the perceived power of the subjects.
