This etching by the German sculptor and graphic artist Johann Gottfried Schadow offers a biting commentary on the disastrous French retreat from Russia in 1812. Produced in 1813, the work captures the desperation and degradation of the Grande Armée during their withdrawal. The composition is arranged as a horizontal frieze, a format that reflects Schadow's background in classical relief sculpture.

In the scene, a group of ragged French soldiers huddle around a small fire in a desolate, snow-covered landscape. The figures are depicted with exaggerated, grotesque features, emphasising their physical and moral collapse. They are shown roasting small animals over the flames, a grim reference to the starvation that plagued the retreating troops. To the left, a figure sits atop a weary, emaciated horse, while others stand in various states of disarray, their uniforms tattered and their postures slumped.

The print serves as a visual record of the anti-Napoleonic sentiment that swept through Germany during the War of the Sixth Coalition. Schadow, who was a prominent figure in the Berlin art scene, utilised the medium of the satirical print to communicate political messages to a wider audience.
