This woodblock print by Torii Kiyomasu I depicts a sparrowhawk, a subject that reflects the early Ukiyo-e interest in avian studies and falconry. As a member of the Torii school, Kiyomasu I was primarily known for his work in the theatre district of Edo, yet his output included various subjects beyond kabuki actors. The print employs the urushi-e technique, where black ink is applied with density to mimic the appearance of lacquer, providing a visual weight to the bird's plumage.
The composition focuses on the bird perched upon a branch, tethered by a rope, which suggests the hawk is a trained hunting bird. The artist uses bold, calligraphic lines to define the feathers and the structure of the wings. The colour palette is restrained, relying on earthy tones and the stark contrast of the black ink against the paper ground. This approach is characteristic of the early eighteenth-century print style, which prioritised graphic clarity over tonal gradation.
Kiyomasu I was instrumental in establishing the Torii school's visual identity. His work often features a strong, assertive line quality that separates his style from the more delicate sensibilities of later artists. The sparrowhawk is rendered with a degree of stylisation that prioritises the decorative arrangement of the feathers over strict anatomical realism. The inclusion of the artist's seal in the upper right corner confirms the print's origin within the Torii workshop. This piece offers a view into the technical development of Japanese printmaking before the widespread adoption of full-colour nishiki-e printing later in the century.
